Posted on January 15, 2018 by Madonna University ABSN
If you’re passionate about changing careers to become a registered nurse, then why not pursue your dream in a city known for its superior healthcare community? While Detroit is known as Motown, Hockey Town, and the Motor City, it is also home to many of the top medical centers in the country because of their cutting-edge research and development. In fact, a handful of these hospitals have been locally, regionally, and nationally ranked as Best Hospitals by the U.S. News and World Report for Adult and Children’s Specialties.
As the healthcare industry in metro Detroit continues to advance, so does the need for experienced BSN-prepared nurses. Through Madonna University’s Accelerated Bachelors of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program, you can become part of this ground-breaking growth – but is an accelerated nursing program in metro Detroit right for you?
To determine if an accelerated nursing program in metro Detroit is right for you, let’s start by exploring what Detroit’s growing healthcare sector has to offer.
According to the Detroit Regional Chamber, healthcare is metro Detroit’s largest industry, employing more than 333,000 workers in 2017. The area has become a hot spot for innovators, investors, and entrepreneurs looking to take the healthcare industry by storm. These individuals are flocking to metro Detroit to cultivate new, marketable products that help meet medical challenges around the world.
Much of this can contribute to the region’s top healthcare facilities, including Ascension Michigan, which is one of the healthcare facilities where Madonna ABSN students gain clinical experience. This experience plays a key role in the ABSN curriculum, granting students the opportunity to network with fellow staff members, registered nurses, doctors, and potentially nurse recruiters.
While Detroit is best known as the center of the automotive industry, you may be surprised to learn that it has a rich healthcare history. In fact, a few of the incredible medical devices used by healthcare professionals today were born in the city of Detroit. These ground-breaking innovations can be traced back to the late 1800s, starting with pharmaceutical research.
Pioneer in Pharmaceutical Research
Parke-Davis and Co., now known as Pfizer, established the first pharmaceutical research lab in downtown Detroit. At its prime, the laboratory was one of the top pharmaceutical research institutions in the world, developing the first systematic methods of performing clinical trials of new medications. Today it can be remembered as a national historic landmark.
Artificial Heart Pump Was Developed
In the early 1950s, Dr. Forest Dodrill, a surgeon at Wayne State University’s Harper Hospital and President of the Michigan Heart Association, collaborated with a team of engineers and scientists from the General Motors Research Laboratory to develop the first mechanical heart pump. In 1952, it made history after successfully being used at Harper University Hospital.
Economy & Nurse Demand
Overall, Detroit affords a lot of opportunity to those who want to pursue a nursing career. Why? Because more than half of the healthcare-related businesses in Michigan are based in Detroit. According to the Detroit Regional Chamber, more than 13,000 healthcare-related businesses and approximately 366,351 jobs reside in the Detroit region, positioning the healthcare industry to have an overall economic impact of $36 billion annually. In other words, the demand for qualified registered nurses is projected to rise immensely.
Two factors can contribute to this demand: the rapidly aging baby-boomer population and the retirement wave of registered nurses. In fact, Michigan’s Bureau of Labor Market Information & Strategic Initiatives ranks registered nurse among the 50 most in-demand jobs in the state through 2018. So why wouldn’t you want to earn your Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in Metro Detroit?
