Onsite Nursing Simulation Labs and Skills Labs
Applying the nursing concepts you learned online into practice is the second stage in Madonna University’s Hybrid Accelerated BSN program. This is done through our onsite nursing simulation labs and skills labs, which feature state-of-the-art medical training equipment.
At our accelerated nursing program site near Detroit, students work with instructors to gain hands-on nursing skills practice using high-tech manikins that realistically simulate a wide variety of functions. Students can monitor the manikins’ breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate patterns and perform wound care.
Nursing Skills Lab
Our nursing skills lab is designed to imitate a real-world hospital environment, with advanced medical equipment, supplies, and high-tech manikins, allowing students to practice nursing concepts safely. Nursing skills labs teach you how to apply fundamental nursing skills safely and effectively, including:
- Holistic head-to-toe assessment.
- Inserting a catheter.
- Taking blood pressure, pulse, and respirations.
- Wound care.
- Nasogastric (NG) tube insertion
You will undergo exercises to become familiar with equipment like vials and needles and electronic equipment you will encounter daily in a clinical environment to get comfortable with skills and techniques before applying them in simulations or clinicals. These skills are the foundation of a nursing career, and working hard in labs will ensure you have the platform to continue your growth as a nursing student.
You can apply the experience from these lessons in a real-world setting with clinical rotations at Ascension Michigan in Detroit.
Nursing Simulation Labs
During nursing simulation labs, students take their nursing skills to the next level through realistic scenarios that challenge them to problem-solve, collaborate, and think critically without the fear of harming a patient.
During the hybrid ABSN program, you’ll participate in various nursing simulation labs at our program site, each supporting different learning objectives. Students may play different roles in the simulated scenarios, acting as nurses, doctors, or family members, to gain a complete understanding of how to communicate effectively while applying critical thinking skills to patient care.
You will work as a group with your fellow cohort members, encountering scenarios designed to test your ability to adapt rapidly. Sessions are structured around:
- A pre-lab briefing, where students are briefed on a mock clinical scenario they may undergo.
- A simulated scenario, which may evolve on the fly to replicate a real-world situation like a patient experiencing sudden heart failure.
- A post-lab debrief, where students and instructors sit down to evaluate how the session went and where they could improve.
